date opened is the date that credit was opened
the date the account was opened by YOU.
The person below me is incorrect. The clock starts ticking from your DATE OF LAST PAY. if you opened it in 2000, and stopped paying in 2003, then it would report negative on your credit report until aprox 2010.(7 years)
It should be the date you actually opened the account.
Beware, some collection agencies will report an erroneous date just to get the debt listed on ones credit report in order to scare one into paying the debt.
The practice of re-dating a last activity is illegal.
Some creditors will re-date a debt to keep it on ones credit report, this is ILLEGAL as per 15USC1681s-2] ยง 623. Responsibilities of furnishers of information to consumer reporting agencies
That means the date you opened that account, like for a particular credit card account, or whatever it is.
