Did you know that you can now get your credit report free from all three consumer credit bureaus? The three major U.S. consumer reporting agencies are now required to provide consumers a free copy of their credit report once a year. Prior to the enactment of this law, Equifax, TransUnion and Experian charged as much as $9.95 for just one report.

Consumers who wish to take advantage of the Fair Credit Reporting Act of 2008 have the right to order their free reports using the system that was established. Be aware that reports will only be sent to those who request them using the proper mechanisms. If you fail to follow the established procedures you may not receive your report or you may be charged a considerable fee. Reports will not be automatically mailed to consumers, instead they must be requested by the individual.

If you only need to get your credit report free once a year, you should take advantage of your rights under the new law to order a free report from each agency once per year. The new centralized system offers consumers the opportunity to order reports online, via mail, or by phone. Ordering online is fast and easy. Try this first, you even be able to get yours instantly online. If you do not have access to the Internet you can request yours using their toll-free number or by mailing your request to:

Annual Report Request Service
P.O. Box 105281
Atlanta, GA 30348-5281

For details on how to get your credit report free visit AnnualCreditReport.com. Be sure to have available information that will help confirm your identity. This will make the process easier and will avoid any delays in receiving your report free.

Welcome to today’s tip. Length of your credit file. More specifically, length of time accounts have been on your file. The concept is fairly simple. The longer an account has been on your file, the longer you’ve been managing your credit (hopefully wisely). That’s why you throw off red flags if you’re say 35yrs old with no credit. Eighteen, maybe a potential creditor can understand because they’re just starting out in life. But otherwise, you’re 35 and no credit, what have you been doing all this time.

OK, lets say for some strange reason you no or very little credit history, here’s a possible solution. Piggy Backing. This method helps to add accounts with years of payment histories to your credit file, thereby helping your credit score. Of course this assumes that the history you’ll be obtaining is a good history. Wouldn’t do much good in adding a history with multiple 30 days late payments. If you must use the account, be sure the delinquent marks are at least 18-24 months old. Anything less will hurt your score more.

This is how the technique works. Find someone , an Aunt, brother, etc., to add you to their account as an authorized user or secondary card holder. In order for this to work, the application must request your SSN#. If it doesn’t, then the history of that account may not transfer to your credit file. This is one of the strategies undercover law enforcement agencies use to make their agents’ records appear longer (in time) than they actually are.

One other thing to watch out for when doing this tactic. Make sure you’re not listed on the account as a ‘joint user’ or anything similar. The difference is major. An authorized user is allowed to use the card and gets the account history added to their file. A joint user has the same usage privileges, but is also responsible the debt. A creditor can attempt to collect from you if they are unable to collect from the original card holder. So be very careful.

Note this strategy may not be as effective for long, seems the fall out from the subprime real estate financing may cause this tactic to become less effective

The growing problem of identity theft has spawned a new industry aimed at keeping your credit information safe by “locking” your credit file. These companies typically charge a monthly fee for their services. One such company advertises that they will pay you 1 million dollars if your identity is stolen while you are an active user of their services. When you get behind all the advertising hype, the vital question is whether or not the monthly expenditure is worth it.

Making a request of the credit bureaus to lock your report does not mean your files will remain locked indefinitely. In theory a credit report lock or security freeze lasts indefinitely. In actuality, the lengths of security freezes vary from one state to another. In addition, credit bureaus require the consumer to “renew” the locks after a given period of time. Since there is no limit to number of renewals, one’s reports can be under a security arrangement for life… but only if the requests are renewed.

One myth surrounding this arrangement is that locking your credit report means the content is “frozen” at the moment in time when the security lock is put in place. This is totally untrue. The lock means access to your information by new sources is severely restricted, but new information still continues to be added. So if you increase your use of current accounts or make payments late, this information will still affect your credit scores.

Even during lock-up, your credit information is still available to those companies with whom you already have open accounts. Likewise the data remains available to employees of the credit bureaus, governmental officials, insurance companies and potential employers who have your permission. So, are there benefits in paying the fees required to place a security freeze on your credit report?

Locking your credit report prevents new accounts from being opened in your name without your knowledge and consent. In order to establish new credit, you must temporarily unlock your credit file through a specific procedure. In that way, the lock provides protection. With constant growth of credit identity theft, lock-up may be something you need. If you are likely to establish a number of new credit accounts in rapid succession, however, the cost and inconvenience of a security freeze may work to your disadvantage.

One cautionary note is in order. Putting a credit report lock-up in place is often oversold by companies profiting from implementing this service on your behalf. While locking your credit does have value, it answers a very small portion of the identity theft dilemma. There are other aspects of identity theft in addition to direct credit-related crime. One of the other dimensions of the problem is theft of benefits, an area called Medical Identity Theft. The impact of this kind of theft can be life-threatening as well as financially devastating.

Credit reports are nothing but an account of a persons credit history. This means that a person’s creditworthiness can be judged by looking at his credit report. A credit report gives the history of debts of a person and banks, financial institutions, and property owners use these credit reports to determine the creditworthiness of a person.

A credit report contains social security numbers, nicknames, spouse’s name, year of birth, current and previous employers, current and previous addresses, proof of loans, credit cards, bank accounts, and retail store accounts. Other information includes public information on insolvency or bankruptcy, tax liens, or legal judgments against a person and names of people who have obtained copies of your credit report within the last six months.

All the information that is mentioned above is compiled by consumer reporting agencies or credit bureaus from many sources such as banks and retail stores. These reports are public but can only be shown to businesses thinking of extending credit, insurance companies, government agencies that grant certain licenses or benefits, and anyone with a legitimate business reason initiated by the consumer.

The decision of lending or not lending or forwarding a loan depends on the moneylender and not the credit bureau itself. If any moneylender denies the request for a loan then he is legally bound to give the name, address, and telephone number of the company that made the report.

The credit score on a credit report is determined based on factors such as payment history, amounts owed, length of credit history, and the types of credit in use. Factors such as previous bankruptcies are also recorded in this report. The amount owed by the debtors is also an important factor in determining the credit score of a person. There are some myths associated with credit scores and the most infamous is that the credit score will improve if all debts are paid but this is not true. Any negative remark stays on the report for at least seven years.
