My boyfriend has no credit history. How can we start him off right?

My grandparents got a credit card in mine and their names when i started college and I built credit by putting emergency expenses on that and before I needed to actually use credit for anything I already had 15 months credit history! My boyfriend has none and we are applying for a new, nicer apartment this summer but he has to have credit history! Can anyone point us in the right direction? Something that’s not gonna cost! Like a credit card with no fee or something! Thanks!
